Rereading

Some people will read a book, close the cover and then never pick that book up again. Some people may pick that book up again not realizing that they read it before until they get part of the way through it. Of course, we always have those people who never picked the book up to start with and more’s the pity.

However, the subject today is those people who do decide to reread a good book. I have always been one of those people. As I have mentioned before, I like to listen to books and podcasts while I work. It helps with the quiet in the office when music just won’t work. Sometimes I need something else going in the background. I’ve started using the Libby app (yes, I had to go get a new library card lol) and I listened to all three of the Hunger Games books. It has been ages since I read those and I had forgotten how different the third book was from the movies.

To me, that is a fun experience, diving back into a world that is so interesting and with characters that are hard not to love (or hate).

Lately, I’ve been listening to the book Code Girls which is about the many ladies who were code breakers during World War II. Learning about the vast backgrounds and experiences that these women came from before they became code breakers is eye-opening, to say the least. If you haven’t read it yourself, it is very interesting and definitely worth your time. Since this was such secretive work, this is something that people know little about. They couldn’t even discuss what they worked on with each other if they worked in different departments because no one knew who worked on what. I’m only part of the way through the book but I’ve really enjoyed it so far.

With Libby, I have also recently discovered an author that I have somehow overlooked. Any of you Romance readers out there will probably think I’m crazy (or thank me if you’ve missed out, too) but until recently I had never read Georgette Heyer. Now I have read several of her books starting with a suggestion on Libby and it just moved on from there. I’ve been reading her Regency’s they are really good and I don’t know how I’ve missed them before but I can definitely see why she has been so loved for so many years. The writing style can be difficult at times but, then again, these books are quite old and I believe that she was attempting to write more in line with historical wording than we often see. I’ve even had to look up things because I don’t know what some of the words mean. I’ve added a fun little quote from the first of her books that I read, Frederica.

may I have a workshop at Alver? For experiments? If I promise faithfully not to blow the house up? If you please, Cousin Alverstoke … ?

Georgette Heyer, Frederica
